Sculptures II: These 2 giant statues from Easter Island represent non-Western art. Despite of it, we in Western societies are awed and impressed by them. Artists in Western Europe, toward the end of the 1800's and beginning of the 1900's, were influenced by art works from Africa, Asia, and the Pacific islands. This influence can be seen in the works of Van Gogh, Picasso, Modigliani, and many others. In Chapter 1 there is an exploration of varieties of art. Discussions of the biological reaction to art are in Chapters 9 and 10.
